If you’ve ever thought “it’s just a few knots”, this is what matting can actually turn into.

This cat came in with severe matting, also known as pelting, where multiple mats have joined together to form one solid layer over the coat

What Is Pelting in Cats?

Pelting in cats is a severe form of matting where the undercoat and topcoat fuse into a solid, hardened, and dense shell of fur directly against the skin. The matting sits tightly against the skin and often pulls the skin up into the mat itself.

Matting Doesn’t Just Sit on Top of the Coat

A lot of owners believe matting is just surface level, but it isn’t.

What you’re seeing here is multiple mats joined together. This is what we call a pelt.

Once it reaches this stage:

  • It cannot be brushed out
  • It cannot be safely cut away
  • It has to be removed carefully from underneath

What’s Happening Under the Matting

This is the part most people don’t realise.

The light patches you can see are areas of skin damage caused by the matting pulling constantly.

Matting can:

  • Restrict movement
  • Cause discomfort or pain
  • Lead to irritation and sores

This is why matting is more than just a cosmetic issue.

Why You Should Never Cut Mats Out with Scissors

This is really important.

When matting forms, the skin is often pulled up inside the mat.
So what looks like “just fur” can actually contain skin.

Cutting into that with scissors can very easily cause:

  • Cuts and lacerations
  • Serious injuries
  • Emergency vet visits

It’s something I see far too often, and it’s completely avoidable.

How Matting Is Actually Removed

Matting like this can only be removed by, carefully shaving underneath the mat and separating it away from the skin.

This has to be done slowly and carefully because:

  • Cat skin is very thin and stretchy
  • The skin moves with the matting
  • Cats don’t stay perfectly still

Even with a calm, cooperative cat, this is delicate work.

How to Prevent This

The good news is, this is preventable.

Simple steps make a big difference:

  • Regular brushing suited to your cat’s coat
  • Checking areas like armpits, belly and back legs
  • Getting advice early if you feel knots starting

The earlier matting is caught, the easier and safer it is to deal with.

Final Thoughts

Matting isn’t just about appearance.
It affects comfort, skin health and overall wellbeing.

If your cat’s coat is starting to feel clumpy or tight, don’t wait until it reaches this stage.
